Alzheimer’s – can we prevent it?


There are two forms of Alzheimers – about 1% of cases are the early-onset genetic form. Other forms are partly genetic, but largely caused by factors that are in our control.

What you can do:
● exercise
● Mediterranean diet

● normal blood pressure – exercise & Mediterranean diet help here

● high levels of good cholesterol – exercise & Mediterranean diet help here too


More good news – the measures above will improve all other aspects of health too, including reduced incidence of cancer, Parkinson's, & heart disease.

Self driving bus in Helsinki


You may remember Ollie, the autonomous, 3D printed bus. Here it is in operation in Helsinki.



Clue: when shooting video with your phone, turn it to landscape mode. Most stills too. In this particular instance, landscape would have avoided cutting off the ends of the bus around the 16 & 25 second marks. Plus, what's happening around the bus would probably have been more interesting than large areas of wet road & grey sky.

Aliens in orbit around a distant star? – Probably not, but $100k raised on Kickstarter to find out

KIC 8462852, was just an unremarkable star 1,480 light years away, until citizen scientists noticed its extreme & irregular dimming. Tabetha Boyajian, an astronomer at Louisiana State University, set up a Kickstarter project which raised over $100,000 (largest single pledge, $10,000) to fund use of a telescope to find out more.

Two Tesla's hacked, stolen – update

Security, tracking & monitoring available in the Tesla Model S would seem to make it a bad target for theft. Case in point – a Model S stolen in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada late last year, was able to be tracked & the thief quickly apprehended. And how did the thief gain entry & drive the Model S away? Apparently, a recently purchased electronic key fob was left in the vehicle – a definite no-no in any vehicle with keyless entry.

On 11 June & 02 August, two Teslas were stolen in Germany, & have since been untraceable. It is understood that the thief or thieves were able to breach the owner’s Tesla account, in each case, to gain entry, & take the vehicle away. Whereabouts of the cars remains unknown.

Hacking of Tesla’s Model S is not completely without precedent. Other breaches, have required physical access to the vehicle & apparently achieved less control. Tesla quickly released an update.1,2,3

One of the attractions of a Tesla Model S is the perception that Tesla’s monitoring of its vehicles makes them virtually theft-proof. Apparently the thieves in Germany disabled this capability. Most likely these thieves wanted the vehicles for parts, most obviously, the battery which is worth tens of thousands of dollars.

This brings up once again the question mark over the security of any internet-connected device. Note too, the suggestion that the hacks were actually against the owners’ Tesla accounts, rather than the vehicles themselves.

How clean is the air you are breathing?


… & how can you know?

There is probably some sort of air quality monitoring in your town or city. In my small city, there are 3 monitors with output easily available to the public. They are 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) & 21 km (13 miles) apart. Hourly & daily graphs are available.

Recently, there have been two crowd funded projects to provide personal air quality measurements & improve the resolution of air quality monitoring world-wide.

CleanSpace Tag

CleanSpace aims at measuring air pollution by detecting just one component, carbon monoxide (CO). Rationale is that, CO is a good indicator of pollution because:

● incomplete combustion (as in an internal combustion engine) produces many pollutants, including CO, so its presence is an indicator of other pollutants

● CO can be a significant pollutant indoors


Something that sets the CleanSpace device apart, is the use of Freevolt, which, “harvests energy from 2G, 3G, 4G & WiFi [2.4 GHz] signals”, to power the device – so no battery swapping or charging – ever.

A smartphone app (iOS & Android) connects to the CleanSpace Tag via Bluetooth & the CleanSpace website to aggregate data captured by all tags.

Even without a Tag, the app is able to display aggregated air pollution data. There is no search function in the app. Zoom & pan is required to see information for anywhere other than your own location.

At this time, CleanSpace is only available for sale in Europe, due to approval issues.

Only in London, was I able to find detectable levels of CO pollution. This is, no doubt, influenced by the limited availability, & will persist until Tags become more widely available.

If you see red lines, appearing only on roads, you are probably seeing Google indicators of heavy traffic. They can be turned off in Tag app settings.

Amber – watchcase & power bank for Apple Watch

A watch that (in some hands at least) struggles to get through a day, makes charging a priority. Amber allows charging anywhere, any time.

Amber is a white plastic Apple Watch case, clad in aluminium. A Watch, inserted as in the images above, is attached to the Apple Watch magnetic charging connector. Charging is supported by the 3,800mAh battery in the Amber.

Ports at the back allow for charging the internal battery (micro USB) & external devices (USB-A).

Tesla Autopilot 2.0

Tesla is about to release a substantial update to the Autopilot hardware & software. New hardware is expected to include radar at each corner, in addition to the existing front-facing radar. The front-facing camera is expected to be upgraded to a triple-system with 25, 50 & 150° fields of view.

LIDAR is not expected to figure in Autopilot 2.0. Tesla is thought to prefer radar for its ability to see through rain, snow, fog & dust.

Software for the 2.0 system will be released as incremental, over-the-air updates, as in the past.
