Nissan electrifies Le Mans with the world’s fastest electric racing car

Credit: Nissan/ Eco-Business.com

"World's fastest"?  How does 300 kilometres per hour sound?

During the recent 24 hour race, Nissan unveiled their ZEOD RC (Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car) electric racer.  With electric & internal combustion power plants plus batteries, it sounds like a hybrid. Capacity to run with the internal combustion engine or electric power alone, suggests its a serial hybrid.

Nissan believes it will be among the front runners at next year's 24 hour race at Le Mans.

Did men's yearning for young women create the menopause?

My take: this idea reverses cause & effect.

To understand, it is necessary to remember that natural selection favours characteristics that produce the largest number of descendants.  For a woman, there comes a time as she ages, that as her strength & general health decline, her descendants are better served by assisting her children in raising her grandchildren rather than undertaking the risks of pregnancy with her diminished powers.  It is in her reproductive interest, therefor that a woman's fertility declines relatively quickly as she ages.  This terminates in menopause.

Having children does not pose the same risks to men, & so their fertility declines more slowly, in line with the general deterioration of their powers.  In practice, this means that men are capable of fathering children into their 70s & beyond.

Following the natural selection principle, is there a reproductive advantage for men preferring young women?

As discussed above, women's fertility declines as they age.  Youth, therefore, is an indicator of fertility.  In general, characteristics which are thought to be beautiful in women are indicators of fertility, e.g. smooth skin, large breasts.  In general, these indicators of fertility are most prominent in the young.

To summarize: men are attracted to fertile women, rather than young women per se.

Playing devils advocate, it could be said that the above is mere speculation. Where is the evidence?

Relevant evidence was posted on these pages last week: a study of tips received by lap dancers revealed that men have a preference for women who are ovulating, i.e. whose fertility is greatest.

Ditch batteries forever with the NX-ECO Battery-Free Wireless Notebook Mouse by Genius

Credit: Genius/ The Gadgeteer

"Battery free"?  Well, kinda ... it uses a capacitor to achieve the same thing.

So, what's the point?  It charges in 3 minutes (sic).   Fast charge times are typical of capacitors.

Other  characteristics of capacitors are multiple charge cycles (100,000 typical) :) & low energy density compared to lithium ion :(

Frequent recharges are likely to be required, making this a perfect candidate for wireless charging.  Unfortunately the design doesn't provide for it.

New gasolene mileage rules will reshape what Americans drive

Credit: Green Car Reports

A confluence of global warming & dwindling recoverable petroleum resources has led the automotive industry in the United States to agree to meet a corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) figure of 54.5 mpg (US) by 2025.

Toyota's Prius exceeds this requirement now.  The challenge is contained in the "C" for corporate in "CAFE".  That's a corporate average fuel economy figure.  I.e. it takes into account all vehicles in a corporation's model range.  For Toyota, that includes not only the Prius, but it's largest pickup & everything else in between.

John Voelcker takes a look at how this will change cars in the USA.  Look for something very similar in your country too:

Stephen Hawking: Humans must escape Earth or perish

Credit: NASA

Escape Earth?  What does that even mean?

Take a look at the image of the Moon's surface.  Notice the craters.  They are the scars of impacts from fast moving objects in a range of sizes.  Every planet in the Solar System has been impacted in a similar way.

So where are the craters on Earth?  Most of them have been obliterated by erosion.  A few survive, the best preserved is Meteor Crater in Arizona.

Credit: Al S/ Yelp

Not quite so obvious is the meteor crater in the Gulf of Mexico.  Evidence points to debris thrown high into the atmosphere by the impact being responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs.

A similar impact today would be a disaster for humanity.

Google acquires Waze

Waze, community based traffic & navigation app has been taken over by Google:

'We’ve all been there: stuck in traffic, frustrated that you chose the wrong route on the drive to work. But imagine if you could see real-time traffic updates from friends and fellow travelers ahead of you, calling out “fender bender ... totally stuck in left lane!” and showing faster routes that others are taking.'

What goes into a Tesla Model S battery — & what it costs

Credit: Tesla/ Green Car Reports

Tesla's share price has recently risen substantially.  Obviously, this is predicated on future sales.  To date, Tesla has released for sale two electric vehicles which are priced outside the reach of most drivers, limiting the market.

On the other hand, this is consistent with Tesla's long declared plan for electric vehicle marketing:
• high performance sports car (Roadster)
• luxury sports sedan (Model S)
• mass market car ("no later than 2017")

All of the above depends on Tesla being able to take advantage of the falling price of lithium ion batteries.  This effect is demonstrated in the reduction in price, with improvement in practicality, from the Roadster to the Model S.

Recently this was questioned in a Barron's article.  Apparently Barron's used the difference between retail prices of two different capacity Tesla battery packs.  This appears to ignore the fact that retail prices include a markup.

Something else the Barron's article ignores is that while other manufacturers use custom cells, Tesla use mass market 18650 cells, which are available at a much lower price per kilo-Watt-hour (kWh).

Hot water that never runs out & costs less — interested?

Heating water consumes a huge proportion of the energy used in most households.  Much of this energy is wasted because the water is heated & then stored until needed.  While it is stored, heat escapes, water cools & has to be heated again.

More energy is wasted because water is required at a range of temperatures.  Washing the dishes in a dishwasher requires hotter water than a shower.  Existing solutions heat water to a temperature too high for most purposes (wasting energy) & then mix with cold as necessary.

One solution is instant hot water.  I.e. heat the water only when it is required, eliminating heat loss from stored water.  Problem with previous systems which used this method was the huge power demand when the water was actually heated.

Solution: heat water, only when required, using microwaves.  Losses due to inefficient resistance heaters & hot water storage are eliminated.  Further energy is saved by heating water only to the temperature required.

Wind turbine disease fails to garner support from scientists

Vibroacoustic disease is an illness attributed to large amounts of low frequency noise claimed to be emitted by wind turbines.  Originally, the name was applied to a condition in aircraft engineers.

Claimed symptoms of vibroacoustic disease include psychological effects which vary from mild mood swings to psychiatric disturbances and digestive tract effects ranging from indigestion to duodenal ulcers.

Recently, a study of the existing literature failed to find any credible evidence to support existence of Vibroacoustic disease.  Hopefully, this is problem solved.

Samsung I9500 Galaxy S4 vs Samsung I9505 Galaxy S4: Double or nothing

Credit: GSMARENA

Samsung's Galaxy S4 is available with 2 different CPUs:

GT-I9505 with quad-core Snapdragon 600 chipset; &
GT-I9500 with Samsung's own Exynos 5 Octa chipset.

As has been reported previously on these pages, the Exynos 5 Octa has 8 cores in 2 sets of 4, one high processing power & battery consumption, the other low power & battery.  Only one set can be active at a time.  Idea is that, by selecting the best core set for each task, both processing speed & run time can be optimized.

In light of the above, why use the more conventional Snapdragon processor at all?  You may have read that the Exynos 5 Octa is incompatible with LTE (4G), so the Snapdragon would be fitted to Galaxy S4s in North America.

In the linked article, GSMARENA claims that:

Snapdragon processors are being fitted in most markets around the world;
• both processors are compatible with LTE;
• production difficulties with Exynos 5 Octa processors is limiting their use;
• difference in benchmarked performance between the two processors is small;
• better battery performance makes the GT-I9505 model (Snapdragon) the better option; &
• talk time is much reduced in the GT-I9500 model (Exynos 5 Octa processor).

Holy Grail of influenza research: a universal flu vaccine

Credit: National Geographic

Why does an influenza vaccination only work for one year?  Others work for years, even a lifetime.

Existing vaccines work by "teaching" the immune system to recognize proteins in the coat which surrounds the virus.  Once the immune system is able to recognize the virus by its coat, it can attack & destroy it.

Unfortunately, the rate of mutation in the proteins in the coat is very high. This means that if you are immune to last year's influenza virus (i.e. your immune system can recognize the proteins in the coat of the virus), this year's virus will have a protein coat so different that you immune system can't recognize it.

Result?  A new vaccination is required each year.

Credit: Sonivo

This speaker connects to your phone without wires, Bluetooth or WiFi.  All that is required is that your phone have an "external speaker".  Probably means a "built in speaker".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shsh52gIOG0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

So how does it work?  A video, previously available on YouTube, claimed the speaker had "New Field Induction".  My guess: it uses induction from the built in speaker in your device.  Notice the iPhone in the video has to be placed directly on the speaker.  Can't imagine sound quality with such an arrangement can be very good.  I'd expect it to be inferior to Bluetooth.  And mono only. / near field communication NFC sound quality stereo wire cable connection battery internal rechargeable LiIon /
