Jaguar has an electric E-type

Jaguar Land Rover Classic’s electric E-type is much more than a one off conversion – the battery fits into the space previously occupied by the XK straight-six – the electric motor is just behind, displacing the gearbox. Battery & motor are a bolt-in replacement for the XK engine & gearbox. In other words, essentially a conversion kit for all of the cars fitted with the XK engine between 1949 & 1992.1

Power is delivered to the differential ordained by Sir William Lyons2 via a custom tailshaft – which may pose the greatest barrier to widespread use of the bolt in battery & motor unit.

All-up weight is 46 kg lighter than the original. With weight distribution essentially unchanged, handling, braking & ride are likewise unchanged.

Why replace the tailshaft? Possibly to deal with the torque of the electric motor – no problem with retention of the standard differential & other components of the rear end, the strength of which is legendary.3
