iPhone 4 Home Button Problem

Some iPhone 4s develop a problem, often after only a short period of use (possibly two months), where the Home button intermittently doesn't work &/or a single press acts like a double click (i.e. enters fast app switching mode).  This unreliability in the Home button makes exiting apps or entering fast app switching a hit & miss affair.  Surprisingly, screen shot (click Power, Home) and reset (click Power, Home & hold) work reliably.  This suggests that the problem is in software.  On the other hand, iOS updates make no difference, although a replacement handset fixes the problem, suggesting a hardware problem.
