Elon Musk – why Tesla is Boring, SpaceX, Mars, autonomy, semi (video)

Recently, Elon Musk appeared on TED Talks – a few highlights:

● Add one more problem to the list of shortcomings of the internal combustion engine (ICE) – it makes tunnels more expensive – cost of tunnelling is proportional to the cross sectional area of the tunnel – tunnels need to be 26-28 feet (7.9-8.5 metres) to allow (amongst other things) for ventilation to cope with the poisonous gasses ICEs emit.

● Semi – load-capacity, range, torque (19:48)

“So this is a heavy duty, long range, semi-truck. So it’s like the highest weight capability & with long range ... out-torque any diesel semi & if you had a tug-of-war competition, the Tesla semi will tug the diesel semi uphill.”

● Semi – driving experience (21:40)

“I mean it’s quite bizarre test driving. You know, when I was driving the test prototype for the first truck, it’s really weird because you’re driving around & you’re just you’re so nimble & you’re in this giant truck.” – no doubt, at least in part, due to the low centre of gravity which electric drive makes possible

● Interplanetary Transport System (32:00)

“This configuration is about four times the thrust of the Saturn V moon rocket ... This thing can take a fully loaded 747 with maximum fuel, maximum passengers, maximum cargo on the 747. This can take it as cargo.”
