Tesla store, Sydney Australia, 7 am
Credit: HH
Reservations for the Tesla Model 3 began in Tesla stores at start of business Thursday 31 March 2016. That meant that the first stores, world wide, to accept reservations were on the East Coast of Australia at 08:00 am local time (21:00 GMT (aka Zulu, UTC, UT1, etc,) the previous day) on Thursday 31 March.
As you can see, quite a few people arrived early. The line ran around the corner. Number 11 in the queue was a hire car driver, who arrived in a black Model S. Around an hour before the opening, he received a phone call, said, “I have a customer,” & left. Good luck for most of the queue – everyone behind him moved up a place.
How can you reserve a Tesla Model 3? Reservations begin in Tesla stores at the local time indicated above, in your time zone, so you can reserve a car any time after that. Alternatively, you can make a reservation online at Tesla.com when the live unveil starts at 8:30pm PDT 31 March. That's 3:30 am Friday 01 April 2016 GMT. / live streaming Tesla Model 3 unveil event on Tesla.com beginning at 8.30pm PDT March 31st reservations Model 3 worldwide two ways to make a reservation queue visit your local Tesla make a reservation online Tesla.com live unveil starts 8:30pm PDT March 31st 8:30 pm PDT 31 March 2016 3:30 am Friday 01 April 2016 GMT Tesla model 3 III electric car mass market car electric vehicle EV /
Apple’s new challenge – Learning how the FBI cracked its iPhone
Subtext of the Apple vs FBI case was: “No one, not even the FBI can can decrypt an iPhone.”
Now that the FBI’s has found someone, (just who, they refuse to disclose) who can decrypt it, Apple will want to restore the reputation of its devices.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/technology/apples-new-challenge-learning-how-the-us-cracked-its-iphone.html?mabReward=A1&moduleDetail=recommendations-0&action=click&contentCollection=Opinion®ion=Footer&module=WhatsNext&version=WhatsNext&contentID=WhatsNext&src=recg&pgtype=article
What does this mean for iPhone owners?
● rule of thumb for the security of any device, computing system, or premises – any sufficiently determined & resourced attacker will eventually overcome any security system
● if your iPhone has attracted the interest of an organisation as well resourced as the FBI, its security is under threat
● all other cases, assuming you have taken the appropriate measures, you device is secure, at least for now
● in time, Apple will upgrade iPhone security, but since the FBI isn’t saying how the San Bernardino shooter’s phone was decrypted, it is hard to see how it can ever be certain that this particular security hole has been closed
Caveat to the above: the iPhone in Apple vs FBI was a 5c – more recent devices may not be susceptible to the same hack.

Electric vehicles are even more environmentally friendly than you thought – update
You’re probably aware of many of the environmental advantages of electric vehicles (EVs) – reduced carbon footprint, reduced air pollution etc.
But you may not have heard of their reduced heat island effect.
Heat island effect? – human activities are concentrated in urban areas. Almost all human activities produce heat – some obviously – such as household heating, some less obviously – such as household cooling. (Have you ever walked past the outside outlet of an air conditioner?) Heat released by human activity in an urban area raises the local temperature – creating a heat island.
NASA explains the heat island effect
Heat island effect leads to more air-conditioner use in hot weather – which further contributes to the heat island effect.
What internal combustion engines do best, is make heat. In practice, only about 20% of the energy in fossil fuel powers the vehicle. The remaining 80% escapes directly as heat – in urban areas, contributing to the heat island effect.
Electric motors are many times more efficient than internal combustion engines, releasing only 20% of the heat energy.
Canbing Li et. al. have shown that in Beijing, “The replacement of CVs [conventional vehicles] by EVs in 2012 could have mitigated the summer heat island intensity (HII) by about 0.94°C, reduced the amount of electricity consumed daily by air conditioners in buildings by 14.44 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), & reduced daily CO2 emissions by 10,686 tonnes.”1
Obviously, the same principle applies to other cities too.

Dyson is developing an electric car
Dyson, the vacuum cleaner manufacturer, is developing an electric car – very few details are available, except:
● a single paragraph (since withdrawn) in a UK government document, saying that the government will provide some funding
● Dyson bought Sakti3, a company which has developed battery technology James Dyson described as, “breakthrough” – new battery technologies are announced every week,1 but almost none of them are bought up by an established, engineering driven, international company

FBI finds another organisation to unlock San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone – postpones court hearing
So the FBI postponed a court hearing in its ongoing case to force Apple to unlock an iPhone. Story is that the FBI found another organisation to unlock the phone.
A few things remain unexplained:
• the purpose of this case was widely believed to be the FBI selecting the best case to establish a precedent for forcing a tech company to decrypt a phone
• Cellebrite, the company believed to have been engaged to decrypt the iPhone, has a long standing association with the FBI – why did it take them so long to think of using Cellebrite again?
Unexplained, unless the FBI expected to lose in court.
Plus, the subtext of this case has been, “Nobody but Apple can decrypt an iPhone & they won’t do it.” And now the FBI claims it’s found someone who can & will.

Rockefeller Family Fund divesting from fossil fuels
“While the global community works to eliminate the use of fossil fuels, it makes little sense—financially or ethically—to continue holding investments in these companies. There is no sane rationale for companies to continue to explore for new sources of hydrocarbons. The science and intent enunciated by the Paris agreement cannot be more clear: far from finding additional sources of fossil fuels, we must keep most of the already discovered reserves in the ground if there is any hope for human and natural ecosystems to survive and thrive in the decades ahead.”
“We would be remiss if we failed to focus on what we believe to be the morally reprehensible conduct on the part of ExxonMobil. Evidence appears to suggest that the company worked since the 1980s to confuse the public about climate change’s march ...” – Rockefeller Family Fund

When is Easter?
Credit: Android Central
Have you noticed
● Easter is on a different weekend each year
● there’s often a full moon just before Easter
● there’s a full moon right now (10:25 GMT 23 March – may not be visible, depending on where in the world you live)
● Easter is this weekend? When is Easter? – simple answer
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on, or after, 21 March each year. Other days of Easter are positioned around the date of Easter Sunday – Easter Friday (Good Friday etc.) is two days before – Easter Monday the day after, etc.
Applying this rule to 2016
● today is Wednesday 23 March
● today is a full moon
● so Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after today – Sunday 27 March 2016
Earliest possible Easter Sunday
“In 1818, as a paschal full moon fell on Saturday March 21 (the Spring Equinox), Easter was the following day – Sunday March 22 – the earliest date possible. It will not fall on this date again until 2285, a span of 467 years.” – Wikepedia1
Latest possible Easter Sunday
“In 1943 a full moon fell on Saturday March 20. As this was before the Equinox the next full moon, which fell on Sunday April 18, determined the date of Easter – the following Sunday, April 25. It will not fall on this date again until 2038, a span of 95 years.” – Wikepedia2

SCAMP – Stanford Climbing Aerial Maneuvering Platform (video)
SCAMP climbing a wall
Credit: Stanford University
A major use of drones is for surveillance, where their ability to fly & hover, can provide unique video coverage. Downside is high energy consumption, which limits endurance. SCAMP is able to maximise run-time by landing on a wall or other convenient structure, perching, climbing up, down, or across the wall, as necessary, to optimize camera angle or signal (for video feed or control).

Domino’s has delivered pizza by robot
Credit: indiansnews.com/
Drones as delivery robots have been mooted by a number of companies, including Flirtey Zookal & Amazon.
But drones are not a good mix with human beings, as some have found to their cost, including 18-month-old Oscar Webb, when he had an eye sliced in half by a drone.
Much of the danger of drones is due to the relative instability of flight, & propellors spinning at thousands of rpm. A robot with wheels would eliminate those dangers, & that is what Domino's used for its first trial delivery in New Zealand on 08 March 2016.

What killed your smartphone?
Credit: techandroid.net
Check the article below about the threats to your smartphone. Comments are useful reading too.
http://the-gadgeteer.com/2016/03/17/what-is-the-worst-thing-to-happen-to-your-mobile-phone/
Take home message from the article above, is that the major dangers to your phone are being dropped onto a hard surface, or submerged under water.
So, what can you do?
Drop protection – a good case. Most cases are not good when it comes to impact protection. Most only offer protection against abrasion & very short falls onto a hard surface. Unfortunately, the most likely falls are from waist height. Otterbox’s Defender is the only case I have used which can reliably protect against falls from waist height onto a hard surface. They are also available for a wide range of phones. Biggest disadvantage is that they add more to the bulk of a phone than other, less protective cases.
https://www.otterbox.com/
I also hear good things about LifeProof cases, which also claim to be waterproof. LifeProof was acquired by Otterbox in 20131.
https://www.lifeproof.com/
Cases can also protect against drops by preventing the drop altogether – phones constructed of metal & glass are popular, but are relatively slippery. Most cases are grippier than a bare phone.
Water protection is more difficult. LifeProof, mentioned above, are the only waterproof cases I am aware of. Samsung’s S5 & S7 phones are themselves waterproof. As an older model, the S5 is now available quite cheaply, & the S7 is the very latest.

Apple vs FBI iPhone encryption – new perspectives
The Apple vs FBI iPhone encryption case has many facets, both technical & ethical, but, just in case you thought you finally had your head around all of the issues, here are a couple of other things to consider:
At least some Apple engineers would rather quit than develop an iPhone backdoor for the FBI

HitchHiker's Guide 2 Tech turns 5!
Credit: bluewallpaperbackground.weebly.com/
Yes, HitchHiker's Guide 2 Tech has turned 5!
First post was on 16 March 2011, an article titled: “Cold Fusion – Didn't we do this already?” My article took a cautious approach to renewed claims on this topic, & despite many changes in energy production, management & use, in the intervening five years, cold fusion has yet to be demonstrated.
Check it out at http://hhg2tech.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/cold-fusion-didnt-we-already-do-this.html
In those 5 years, there has been at least one post every day – over 7,800 in total, & just short of 150,000 page views.
Check back tomorrow – new material every day! / blog 5th fifth 5 five birthday years /
Protect your packages with Package Guard – video
Credit: Package Guard
Package Guard is pretty much just what its name says. Its purpose is to prevent theft of parcels left at your front door. As implied in the image above, it depends on the delivery driver placing the parcel on the Package Guard. Anyone else seeing a problem?
When a parcel is placed on the device, it notifies you, &/or others you choose, via email or SMS. If the parcel is removed without disarming the Package Guard, it sounds an alarm & sends another notification.
Although the video below indicates that the Package Guard can protect more than one package if they are stacked on top of each other, some further potential problems suggest themselves:
● once the first package is placed on the Package Guard, the instruction about package placement will be wholly or partly covered
● if large package(s) is/are placed on top of smaller ones, the stack may become unstable & fall, triggering the alarm
● a helpful delivery driver may try to stabilise an unstable stack by re-arranging the packages & trigger the alarm
As of this writing, you can still reserve a Package Guard on Kickstarter with a $50 pledge.

Australia’s Environment Minister claims “peak emissions” – "No" say climate experts
Australia’s Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, claimed on ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) radio this morning that Australia, “... reached peak emissions in 2005-06 ... & the course of history to come for Australia is that we will continue to be below that figure.”
Brought responses including:
● “... there is no peak in sight … Australia’s emissions growth rate is projected to be among the highest of all developed countries.” – Hugh Grossman, Executive Director of RepuTex
● “Australia’s emissions have been rising for the past two years, land clearing is escalating in Queensland & New South Wales, there are big question marks over the future of the emissions reduction fund & we have a wet lettuce safeguards policy & no limits on coal-fired electricity generation.” – John Connor, Chief Executive of the Climate Institute
● “And Australia's fossil fuel emissions continue to rise, jumping 3% in the 2014-15 year – unlike the European Union & the US, whose emissions have genuinely peaked.” – Climate Council
● “There is no time to waste. Every year that we don’t significantly reduce fossil fuel emissions matters. We cannot solve climate change through questionable carbon accounting that hides increases in fossil fuel emissions." – Prof. Will Steffen, Australian National University

Tesla Model S racing series
Credit: Tesla/autogazette.de
We’ve all seen the endless parade of Tesla Model S cars at the drag strip on YouTube. Now get ready for Tesla Model S circuit racing – the Electric GT World Series.
For now, it will be a one-model series – Tesla Model S P85+. All teams are required to enter two cars. This may be following the Formula One model – two cars, two drivers from each team, but is more likely to be following the Formula E model – two cars for each driver, with a car swap around half way, to avoid charging or battery swapping. It’s worth noting, though, that the Tesla Model S was designed to permit battery swapping.
Modifications will be permitted to aerodynamics, suspension, brakes & weight. Motor, control software & battery will be stock, apart from battery cooling.
Battery cooling? While the battery cooling system of the Model S is adequate for any legitimate road use, or even drag racing, sustained high power demands lead to the battery overheating, & reduced power mode. This has been demonstrated at the Nurburgring race circuit. Text & video at:
https://jalopnik.com/heres-what-a-tesla-model-s-can-do-around-the-nurburgrin-1600644908
Another possibility is that battery temperature may become another parameter to be balanced against speed, as happens in other forms of motor racing with brake wear, tyre wear, fuel consumption & engine durability.
Long term, the plan is to open up the series to other makes, but for now, there's nothing that can keep up with a Tesla Model S.

Tesla has a secret – wanna see?
Seems a Tesla owner & hacker named Jason Hughes has been investigating the Tesla Model S operating software, found something interesting, & decided to share it in this cheeky tweet:
