Solid state electrolytes could become the dominant technology in LiIon batteries by 2030
Credit: Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences/ Charged EVs
Storage capacity of lithium ion (LiIon) cells can be increased by using a lithium metal electrode. However, if this is done, the lithium can form dendrites (in effect wires) through the liquid electrolyte, ultimately shorting out the cell. To overcome this problem, work is progressing on a solid state alternative to liquid electrolytes.
