Sandisk Extreme 900 SSD – 10Gbps USB 3.1 performance at last!

Sandisk Extreme 900 SSD
Credit: Hardware Zone

Good:
● fast
● rugged
● runs cool

Bad:

● drive contains 2 SSDs configured as a RAID 0 array1 – which accounts for some of the speed – but 2 drives, all other things being equal, have twice the failure rate – the “R” in RAID stands for “Redundant” – but RAID 0 doesn't have any – perhaps that’s what the zero stands for

● larger & heavier than alternatives2,3

Britain reconsiders Hinkley C nuclear power – renewables cheaper, faster, safer

Britain has put its new Hinkley Point nuclear power plant1 on hold. Vested interests are vocal,2,3 but nuclear prices continue to rise, (never on time, never on budget) – while renewables keep getting cheaper.

Nuclear power – never on time – never on budget

Nuclear Construction: Never On Time, Or Budget

http://breakingenergy.com/2014/08/15/nuclear-construction-never-on-time-or-budget/

The Great Unknown in Nuclear: Cost

“While the nuclear industry ... it must also grapple with one of its chronic problems – namely, cost.”

“Lucas Davis, a professor at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley ... The budget for nuclear plants – historically speaking – exceed expectations & completing the plants often takes longer than expected. Davis, in fact, said he couldn't even think of one project that has come in on time &/or under budget.”

https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/the-great-unknown-in-nuclear-cost

A decade late, way over budget – yep, that's nuclear power

“A new nuclear power plant in the UK is already facing budget blowouts & massive delays – before any work has even started on it.”

https://www.crikey.com.au/2016/07/15/nuclear-power-plant-cost-in-france-british/

Vogtle: at $65 billion & counting, it’s a case study of nuclear power’s staggeringly awful economics

“Sane people do not let projects get 800% over budget. Unless, perhaps, if someone else is putting up the money. And that’s exactly what happened with the first two Vogtle reactors – the overruns were pushed on to ratepayers; Georgia Power had to eat some small portion of them, but basically ratepayers were forced to pick up the tab.”

“When the project was announced, & when the utilities building the project first applied for taxpayer loans to help finance the project, Southern Company (Georgia Power’s parent) said the two reactors would cost about $14 billion & would be online in 2016 & 2017.
That was back around 2008. Vogtle got its taxpayer loan promise in February 2010 & its construction permit in February 2012. Three & a half years later, Vogtle is more than three years behind schedule – 39 months behind, in fact.”

“And the cost of building Vogtle has, not surprisingly, gone up. Way up. Right now, it’s somewhere around $16 billion & rising fast – the over-budget portion caused by the delays alone is $2 million per day. And ... construction still has quite a long way to go.”

https://safeenergy.org/2015/08/03/vogtle-at-65-billion-and-counting/

Does Nuclear Power Have a Future in America?

“Over in Tennessee, the Watts Bar project hit its own speed bumps. Initially slated to open in 2014, the project is now two years behind schedule. TVA has also admitted the project would cost at least $1.5 billion more than anticipated — a 60 percent overrun on its $2.5 billion budget. And that doesn’t include the $1.7 billion the company spent in the 1970s & ’80s.”

How clean is the air you are breathing?

… & how can you know?

There is probably some sort of air quality monitoring in your town or city. In my small city, there are 3 monitors with output easily available to the public. They are 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) & 21 km (13 miles) apart. Hourly & daily graphs are available.

http://www.health.act.gov.au/public-information/public-health/act-air-quality-monitoring/real-time-graphs

Recently, there have been two crowd funded projects to provide personal air quality measurements & improve the resolution of air quality monitoring world-wide.

CleanSpace Tag

CleanSpace Tag + app on iPhone
Credit: CleanSpace/Crowdfunder

CleanSpace aims at measuring air pollution by detecting just one component, carbon monoxide (CO). Rationale is that, CO is a good indicator of pollution because:

● incomplete combustion (as in an internal combustion engine) produces many pollutants, including CO, so its presence is an indicator of other pollutants

● CO can be a significant pollutant indoors

Something that sets the CleanSpace device apart, is the use of Freevolt, which, “harvests energy from 2G, 3G, 4G & WiFi [2.4 GHz] signals”, to power the device – so no battery swapping or charging – ever.

A smartphone app (iOS & Android) connects to the CleanSpace Tag via Bluetooth & the CleanSpace website to aggregate data captured by all tags.

Even without a Tag, the app is able to display aggregated air pollution data. There is no search function in the app. Zoom & pan is required to see information for anywhere other than your own location.

At this time, CleanSpace is only available for sale in Europe, due to approval issues.

Only in London, was I able to find detectable levels of CO pollution. This is, no doubt, influenced by the limited availability, & will persist until Tags become more widely available.

CleanSpace app showing high & medium levels of CO pollution
Credit: CleanSpace/App Store

If you see red lines, appearing only on roads, you are probably seeing Google indicators of heavy traffic. They can be turned off in Tag app settings.

Paul Drayson, of Drayson Technologies interviewed about the CleanSpace Tag

If you live in Europe, you can still buy a CleanSpace Tag at:

Atmotube

Atmotube & smartphone app
Credit: Atmotube

Atmotube is broadly similar to CleanSpace in that:

● a portable detector collects local pollution information for the user

● displays it on a smartphone app

● aggregates it to a website maintained by the manufacturer

Differences:

● by contrast with CleanSpace, Atmotube measures a huge array of pollutants: carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, benzine, d-limonene, a-pinene, acetaldehyde, hexanal, ethylene glycol, acetone, propane, toluene, methylene chloride, 1,3-butadiene, vinyl acetate, acetylene dichloride, xylene, VOCs in smoke, acrylyl chloride & methyl chloroform

● lithium ion battery charged via USB-C

● no aggregated data available at the time I checked
