Some ways the Samsung Galaxy S7 is better than the iPhone – update

Samsung Galaxy S7 microSD & SIM card carrier
Credit: Life Hacker Australia

Camera

You’ve probably heard that that the quality of the image a camera produces isn’t simply a matter of pixels, & the camera in the S7 looks set to prove it. The S7 has a 12 megapixel camera, down from 16 in the S6. Samsung claim the new camera will produce superior images, particularly in low light. This may be a hard idea to sell, but there are good reasons to believe it can work.

Cameras in top-of-the-range phones are remarkably good, despite the compromises required to cram them into the tiny space available in a phone which has skinny-jeans-compatibility as a major design parameter. A small space for the camera means a small space for the light-sensitive sensor. A high pixel count means that each individual pixel is smaller. The resulting minuscule light-sensitive pixels perform poorly, particularly in low-light, where they produce dark, low-contrast, “noisy” images.

A small sensor can most obviously be improved by making it bigger. While constrained by skinny-jeans-compatibility, Samsung has increased the size of the camera’s photo-sensor marginally from 1/2.6 inch (in the S6) to 1/2.5 inch in the S7. When combined with a reduced pixel-count, the S7 has significantly larger pixels. Rumour has it, 1.4 micron pixels, in the Galaxy S7, 1.12 micron in the S6.

Update: 1.4 micron pixels confirmed – camera teardown at: http://www.chipworks.com/about-chipworks/overview/blog/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-teardown

Samsung claims that, in practice the new, larger pixels, are able to gather 56 percent more light than before, for better low-light images.

More obviously, images can be improved by letting more light into the camera, & Samsung have added an f1.7 lens.

A lens which lets in more light is sometimes said to be “fast”. This is a reference to the fact that with more light, the exposure time can be shorter, which leaves less time for camera shake or movement by the subject to reduce the quality of the image. Tim Cook could have recently used such a feature to avoid embarrassment at the Super Bowl.

We’ll have to wait for sample images, but taken together, these changes should yield better images, particularly in low light.

Fast charging

0-60% battery charge in 30 minutes.

microSD card

Returns in the S7 after being omitted from the S6, although Samsung hasn’t taken advantage of the latest Adoptable microSD capability in Android Marshmallow.

Waterproof

IP68 standard – one meter under water for 30 minutes. Also in the S5, omitted from the S6.

Samsung Galaxy S7 announced

Samsung has finally announced its long-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S7, & its almost exactly as predicted in these pages.

And yes, the S7 & S7 Edge do have a microSD slot.

Android Marshmallow (6.0) has a new feature which makes memory in a microSD card contiguous with internal flash memory. “Adoptable” in Android Marshmallow parlance. E.g. if the user adds a 128GB microSD card to a 32GB Marshmallow phone, it will effectively become a 128+32 = 160GB phone. All of that 160GB can be used as a single flash storage to store apps, music, video or any other type of data, without the user having to be concerned with whether any item is actually in the internal flash or the microSD.

Unless it’s a Galaxy S7!

Samsung has decided to disable adoptable microSD flash :( Apparently the brilliant minds that came up with the, “internal SD card”, in earlier Samsung phones, have struck again.

Samsung’s implementation of microSD memory may be even more of a limitation than expected, because S7s will have only 32GB internal flash memory in many markets, including USA.

Grey market?

Climate science under attack in Australia

Australia's government is a coalition of conservative parties, the larger partner paradoxically calling itself, the Liberal Party. One of its earliest actions, after gaining power, was the abolition of the government funded, Climate Commission. Response was what became Australia's biggest crowd-funding campaign, to reform as the Climate Council. Their purpose essentially unchanged:

"We exist to provide independent, authoritative climate change information to the Australian public. Why? Because our response to climate change should be based on the best science available." – Climate Council

Not content with attempting to destroy the Climate Council, Australia's conservative government has recently announced plans to abolish over 100 climate science research positions from Australia's foremost scientific research organisation, the CSIRO.1 Part of the response is an email to supporters from Professor Will Steffen, a member of the Climate Council, which is reproduced below in its entirety.
__________

I recently emailed you to share my dismay at the news that the CSIRO plan to cut over 100 jobs from the agency’s climate science staff. The messages of support and solidarity we received at the Council from our community were truly heartening - thank you!

The fact remains that cutting climate science now, as the demand escalates for both reducing our emissions and protecting our communities from worsening impacts, just doesn’t make sense. It’s like flying into a violent storm and ripping out the radar, navigation and communication instruments.

To get the facts out about how significant and damaging these cuts will be for Australia and the world, we've put together a new report, Flying Blind: Navigating Climate Change without the CSIRO. And already this morning, it’s received widespread media coverage.

The report reveals some worrying findings:

● The cuts to CSIRO’s climate science capacity will damage Australia’s ability to understand, respond to and plan for a changing climate.

● If the cuts proceed, Australia will have already reneged on a key promise in the Paris climate agreement.

● The cuts will leave a gaping hole in international science community’s ability to understand climate change in the Southern Hemisphere.

This may be one of our most important reports yet - and we’ve put together a short video to help the report reach as many people as possible. Will you please share it widely with your friends and networks? And if possible, go the extra step of asking them to do the same? Australia’s climate scientists need our support.

Outrage over these proposed cuts is shared world-wide - almost 3000 scientists from 60 countries have signed an open letter to highlight how these cuts will significantly limit CSIRO’s capacity and diminish the global climate change research effort. This pressure from the international community, along with your efforts to stop this story slipping off the front pages CAN make a difference.

It is so important that the whole community are aware of how these cuts will impact our ability to understand, plan for and respond to climate change - so please, help us get this report out there. Thank you.

In solidarity,

Professor Will Steffen
Climate Councillor

P.S. These cuts to climate science are deeply troubling, it makes our work, getting the facts out to the public even more vital. Please consider chipping in a few dollars a week so we can keep going.

You can also keep up with Climate Council on Twitter or Facebook.

Error 53 – how to protect your iPhone 6 – update

Update: Apple now has a complete solution for Error 53

Error 53 has been causing problems for iPhone 6 users since at least 18 August 2015.

iFixit research has revealed that:

● Home button & its fingerprint sensor are paired with the iPhone 6 at the factory. If it is replaced, even with a genuine part from another iPhone, an Error 53 will be generated, & iPhone bricked, if iOS is updated using iTunes.

● iPhone 6s is susceptible too.

● If the home button is replaced, even with a genuine part, the home button will work, but the fingerprint sensor will not.

● Error 53 problems are not restricted to after-market parts from suppliers other than Apple.

An iPhone 6 (including Plus or s) is at risk from Error 53 if any of the following apply:

● If the home button has been replaced by anyone other than Apple.

● If the fingerprint sensor has stopped working.

● If your iPhone has failed to complete an Over The Air (OTA) update – failure to complete doesn’t create the problem, but indicates that it probably exists.

● Error 53 occurs during a iOS update through iTunes, while connected to a computer, if the home button cannot be identified as the correct, paired component. It is conceivable, & some have claimed, that this can happen even if none of the risk factors above apply, perhaps due to some minor mishap. Have your ever dropped your phone?

OTA update error
Credit: Apple/iFixit.com

How to keep your phone safe from Error 53 & bricking:

● Do a backup before updating any operating system on any platform.

● iFixit research indicates that OTA allows an iOS update without risking an Error 53. If the OTA fails, it is possible that the update has failed due to some other reason. Consider repeating.

If you have arrived at this point without a successful update, try your nearest Apple store. Some owners indicate that a repair or replacement has been provided at no cost.

If Apple won't provide a free fix, one of the expensive options is indicated. You could remain on the current version of iOS, but be aware that an out-of-date OS places your device at risk from other causes, such as malware & hacking.

Zeiss is making high-quality lenses for your iPhone

Credit: Zeiss/Funky Space Monkey

Best camera is the one you have with you – that frequently means the camera in your phone, & the cameras in top-of-the-range phones are remarkably good, despite the compromises required to cram them into the tiny space available in a phone which has skinny-jeans-compatibility as a major design parameter.

Many solutions to the limitations of phone cameras are available, & the German lens maker, Zeiss is about to provide one more for the iPhone 6 & 6s, as well as their Plus variants. Three lenses will be available, as shown in the image above: telephoto, wide-angle & a zoomable macro lens, plus the aluminium bracket. Lenses will be attached to the phone by screwing into the bracket. The bracket will also provide a thread for attachment to a standard tripod, plus a mounting point for other accessories.

Release is promised before mid-2016.

This may just be the 'droid you’re looking for

Credit: Spin Master/nextstories.com/Talkino

If you’ve seen Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, you will remember the new 'droid – BB-8. Sphero has had a BB-8 robot available for some time, but at 11.4 cm (4.5 inches) tall it is much smaller than the one in the movie, & has a “head” which is proportionally smaller.

If the miniature BB-8 is not to your taste, you may be interested in a larger BB-8 at 48 cm (19 inches) from Spin Master. It also responds to voice commands & comes with a dedicated remote.

Spin Master's BB-8 is scheduled to make its first appearance at the Toy Fair in New York City, 13-16 February.

Tesla Model 3 event, March 2016 – may show the car, will take deposits

There has been much speculation surrounding a statement from Elon Musk about the Model 3 event at the end of March 2016.

On 29 January, in a presentation at Tesla Motors, France headquarters in Chambourcy, the following exchange occured:

Question from the audience: When will we see pictures of Model 3?
Elon Musk: The first pictures of the Model 3 will be end of March. Yeah ... I am being a little coy here, we're not gonna show everything about the Model 3 until a lot closer to production time.”

If you are not a French speaker, don’t be put off by the text in the video below. Elon Musk apparently doesn’t speak French either, so all of the important audio is in English. The exchange above begins at the 12:26 mark:

This tells us that:

● the long promised March 2016 Model 3 event is still on

● in response to a question specifically about pictures, he indicated that they will be available at that time

● no information about what else will be available

Below is an item from Green Car Reports, 11 February, which indicates:

●  “unveiling” of the Model 3 at the end of March

● Elon Musk himself is still undecided about how much to reveal

● first deliveries end of 2017

● deposits of $US1,000 will be accepted in Tesla stores on 31 March

● online deposits will be accepted from 01 April

● Tesla has a high level of confidence that the event will provide enough information to attract $1,000 deposits – if, as in the past, deposits are refundable, this may not be a seen as a very high barrier

Extra free space on your Google account

If you want 2 GB of extra free storage space on your Google Drive, all you need to do is check the security of your account. This is no imposition, because you should be doing it from time-to-time anyway.

More at Mashable:

Tim Cook posts a blurry picture – Twitter celebrates

Tim Cook’s image from the Super Bowl

Some headlines weren't much better than the twitterers:

Tim Cook's blurry Super Bowl photo stuns world

Tim Cook posts god-awful blurry photo from his iPhone at Superbowl

Here’s Tim Cook’s ringing endorsement for iPhone photography
http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2016/02/08/heres-tim-cooks-ringing-endorsement-for-iphone-photography/

etc.

What really happened:

● Tim Cook, Apple CEO, took a picture at the Super Bowl

● it had a lot of camera shake – i.e. operator error – nothing to do with whatever camera was used

● but he published it on Twitter anyway

● Twitter celebration, apparently based on the assumption that an iPhone was used

● some media followed suit with some absurd headlines, such as the “stunning” headline above

● other headlines were a bit more realistic

People are being super mean to Tim Cook about his blurry Super Bowl photo

● Tim Cook deleted his tweet

● tweeted a new photo

“Error 53” – Apple software update threatens to kill your iPhone 6 – update

Credit: ikream.com

Update: Apple now has a complete solution for Error 53

If you have had repairs done to the home button on your iPhone 6 by anyone other than Apple, do not upgrade to iOS 9.

Why not? Your iPhone is likely to be bricked!

Some owners claim the same problem has occurred in phones which have been damaged, but no repair has been done.

Any data not backed up, will be lost, & Apple will be unable to repair the iPhone, although they will sell you a refurbished phone of the same specification.

Training eagles to take out drones (video)

Drones of all sizes have rapidly become popular. Prices continue to fall & capabilities to rise. Few regulations exist to control their use.

Few recognise the dangers to privacy & physical safety of people & aircraft.

Run across seven deserts in seven continents in seven weeks

Credit: Runner Today

Population growth continues apace, & with consequent growth in demand for water, the UN has predicted a 40% shortfall in water supply by 2030, if we continue our current wasteful use.1,2

An average American household uses around 100 US gallons (379 litres) per person per day.3 Surprising as that figure is, it is only about 5% of average daily use.4 How is this possible?

Most water use in first world countries is water used on behalf of consumers, outside the home. E.g., to make a T-Shirt consumes 2,495 litres of water.5

Jeans – 9,982 litres of water
Coffee – 132 litres of water per cup
Loaf of Bread – 48 litres of water
Paper – 13 litres of water per sheet5

To highlight the danger, Mina Guli (CEO & founder of Thirst, an education water conservation charity), is running across 7 deserts, in seven continents – total length equals 40 marathons.
